Perspective shot of St.Peter's Basilica Located in the Vatican City of Rome, St. Peter’s Basilica symbolizes the power of the Church. Dedicated to Peter [the apostle] the first pope, the Basilica houses St.Peter’s tomb along with many other popes. The basilica in the first century AD was used for civic events and as a cemetary. Originally, the basilica was founded by Emperor Constantine (324) but was eventually rebuilt in the 16th Century. Planned by Pope Nicholas V, the Basilica’s construction plan, Fabbrica di San Pietro was operated by several people throughout history, all under supervision of the Church or the current ruler at the time. The New St. Peter’s Basilica The New St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City was designed as a three aisles Latin cross containing a dome at the intersection which is located over the high alter that shelters the shrine to St.Peter the apostle. The original idea of the church came from Pope Nicholas V when the walls of the old St. Peter's basilica were found covered in dust. Upon the discovery in 1492, the Pope ordered Bernardo Rossellino to construct a new apse. The construction came to a halt when the Pope died. The responsibility later fell to Paul II. Paul II entrusted the project to Giuliano da Sangallo in 1470. It wasn't until 1506 that the first stone of the new basilica was laid. The new basilica was designed to form a Greek Cross, but under the switches in control, the Greek cross evolved into a Latin cross with three aisles separated by pillars. St Peters Basilica (Rome); 1506-1626   St.  Peter' s  Basilica also called New St. Peter's Basilica is in Vatican City, Rome. Situated   on the Vatican hill in the UNESCO world heritage site.   It   replaced the O ld S t.  Peters Basilica.  The  Old  St  Peter's Basilica  was  the 4 th -century church begun by the  Emperor Constantine the Great.   Designed  by Donato  Bramente , Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo  Bernini.  They all had different ideas on how to go about the design of the building.  Construction  began in 1506 and completed in 1626. This specific location was symbolic because it was where St. P eter died a martyr and was buried on those same grounds.
