Stuart Jacome Arch 211- M11 Prof. Khorsandi Blog Post Villa Muller The Villa Muller was designed by famous architect Adolf Loos. The architect was commissioned to do this project by civil engineer and building contractor, Frantisek Muller.  The Villa was built in Prague, in Czech Republic 1928-30. This house is a prime example of early modern architecture and the use of raumplan. Raumplan is a planning method which is based on isolated rooms that are dynamic in section. The method emphasizes the scale each room and often times they are at different levels, therefore steps are required to access them.  The concept of the villa was to express Loos’ ideas of economy and functionality. Raumplan is spatial and clearly shown in Villa Muller through multi-level parts of each room; which hit at their importance, functionality, and symbolism. The Villa Muller, located in Prague, Czech Republic, was designed by architect Adolf Loos. The clients for the house were Frantisek Muller and his wife, Milada Mullerova. This building clearly illustrates the beginning of early modernism. It is also known as a landmark for early modernist architecture. Loos’ ideas of economy and functionality are clearly depicted in this building. The spatial design of this building is expressed in multi-level parts of individual rooms. The placing of the rooms show their function and importance. This is known as the Raumplan. In Loos’ essay “Ornament and Crime,” he criticized decorated surfaces. For the exterior surfaces of the Villa Muller, he designed a white cubic facade. Emilia Kightley-Sutter Villa Muller was designed by architect Adolf Loos  was commissioned by Frantisek Muller and his wife Milada Mullerova. It is set in Prague in the Czech Republic. Muller was an engineer and had partial ownership of a construction company, Kaspa and Muller. His company focused on reinforced concrete and progression of building techniques. Loos was a fan of designing concepts that are timeless, and related to the function of the building. During the initial designing of the structure, Loos fell sick and the first architect on the job Karel Lhota helped in designing. Before communists took control of the house, the couple lived freely for 18 years. It was designed in 1930, it was noted as an example of modernist architecture, fusing economy and functionality.
