Ingalls Hockey Rink , 1958, (New Haven, CT), Biomorphism

The Ingalls Hockey Rink, located at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut was designed by architect Eero Saarinen. This project was completed in 1958 and is characterized by the sweeped dome roof. Eero Saarinen was a Yale graduate and the rink is actually known as the “yale whale.” Saarinen used curved walls and roofs, and uses biomorphic architecture in the David S Ingalls Hockey Rink. This project was worked on with Kevin Roche, who worked with Saarinen and took part in the rink’s original design.
The rink is two hundred feet long and eighty-five feet wide with organic shapes and forms. The rink has a tensile structure, consisting of a two hundred ninety foot long central arch of reinforced concrete. The main support of the wooden roof is hung from a cable structure giving the building a double curve. The lateral loads that may affect the building (wind), are being stabilized by cables from the center arch to the outer edges of the building.
This building shows its simplicity in the complexity of the structure. The symmetry of the building may seem complex, but the rectangular main rink with filleted edges reinforces the simplicity of it. This emphasizes it and brings the roof to new heights. The main structure is unfinished concrete and it compliments the color and texture of the oak roof. The curtain wall of glass punctures the structure, this becomes the main entrance to the building.
Although it’s an ice rink, the wooden roof represents warmth and scale to the occupants of the building. The interior reflects the exterior and vise versa. The ramps and directions of the structures and the wooden panels create an interactive space between the occupants and the structure. The dome of the rink rises seventy-five feet above the ice.
Related imageTo Ingalls Hockey Rink design does a great job relating its spatial use with the architecture. The game of hockey is fast paced and in many rinks, views may seem disconnected from the game. Saarinen’s design brings the occupants and the architecture together in a way where the entire space becomes one.
