Robie House, (Chicago, USA); 1909 ;Prairie

The Robie House is located next to the campus of University of Chicago, the district of southern Chicago. It was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright at Oak Park Studio from 1908 to 1909. The project was designed for Frederick C. Robie, which is a business person in Chicago. The Robie family moved in shortly after completing the project in 1910, but they sold the house due to financial issue.
The Robie family lived here for only 14 months. The project was faced to tear down after the right had changed to several buyers. It has saved because of Wright and the people who related to the project. The house has operated and opened visit by The Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust.
The Robbie House is the great model of Prairie Style. And it has named as the pioneer of American Architecture Style. It has collected in National Historic Landmark in 1963.
Based on the site of Robie House is 180 feet wide and 60 feet deep only, and it is located in the corner. The landlord required that can enjoy the prairie landscape in indoor space, and also have sufficient privacy at home. Wright needed to face to the conditions of site and landlord’s requirements to create his design style.
The main entrance and children's playroom and garage and living space are the ground floors. The second floor is the living rooms, dining room, guest rooms, kitchen and maid's room. The third floor is the main bedroom, children rooms and guest rooms.

The staircase has set in the middle of middle of the house to make connection to three levels, and it separated the open space in different functions.
A low wall is built on the side of sidewalk on ground floor to ensure the privacy and security of the vestibule in first floor. The outdoor balcony in second floor and the wall can effectively to block the pedestrians’ sight and ensure the privacy of the home; but it does not hinder the beauty landscape of the prairie.
The Robie House main entrance is located on the north-west side of the building which is close to the edge of northwest of the site. This design preserves the privacy of the home. In general, guests who are first time visit will not be allowed to enter if they are not informed to owner.
The exterior of building has an outer eaves, an extending exterior wall, and a cemented edge horizontally. Overall the design style has been responding the image of the endless grassland is where you can rest and protect. The building’s name is called "home."
The exterior wall is made of Roman bricks. The cement with the same color as the bricks is used for the vertical joints. The stitching is cement-colored, and on the whole, it visually makes people feel its horizontal extensibility.
An entire row of floor-to-ceiling windows and doors are set in the living room and dining room of the south. The sunlight penetrates to Wright’s special design of art glass, to make geometric shape of decors look obviously. The Interior décor as furniture, ceilings, lamps, and even carpets come from Wright’s design.
The design of Robie House is not only on the two dimensional arrangement and interaction, but also on the physical and quantitative aspects of the architectural structure.
