Palace of
Versailles
Palace of
Versailles is a museum that is great tourist attraction in France. The building
was constructed in 1624 by King Louise XII as a hunting lodge and it was
designed by architect Jacques
Lemercier. The
building was enlarged into a loyal palace by King Louise XIV who moved to live
there ("The Palace"). The building expansion was
done in two phases. The first phase was from 1661-1678 and was designed by
architect Louis Le Vau while the second phase was done from 1678-1715 and
was designed by architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart. It is estimated that
the building cost a total of two billion dollars since the first construction
and all the expansion phases.
The building was inspired by the baroque
Italian villas architecture, however, it was executed in the French classical
style, the garden front and wings were encased in white cut ashlar stone known
as the enveloppe in 1661-1678. The exterior features an arcaded, rusticated
ground floor, supporting a main floor with round-headed windows divided by
reliefs and pilasters or columns. The attic storey has square windows and
pilasters and crowned by a balustrade bearing sculptured trophies and flame
pots dissimulating a flat roof. (En.wikipedia.org, 2018).
During King Louise XV’s
error, he remodeled the king petite’s apartment, and built a pavilion near the
grand Trianon and they were designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel . King Louise XVI transformed
the interior design, added a theatre (Théâtre de
la Reine) and transformed the arboretum trees planted by King Louise XV.
During the French revolution, the Versailles fell beyond repair the restoration
work done by Napoleon and Louise XVIII was insignificant. The main effort to
restore the Versailles was done by Louis
Philippe who built a museum in the south wing which was previously used to lodge
the members of the loyal family (Science, 2018).
In the 20th
century, the France minister of culture redecorated the interior of the Versailles
using silk. He also restored the original design of the chambre de la reine and chambre du roi. The project cost a
significant amount of money due to the complex furniture design and the
hundreds of kilograms of gold and silver purchased (En.wikipedia.org,
2018). During
the 21st century, 135 million euros was allocated to repair the
building, maintain the gardens and continue the restoration of the bosquet des trois fontaines. The project is ongoing
till now.
