Fransworth House was built by Ludwig Mies
Van Der Roche from 1945 to 1951. He is a renowned architect of 20th
century’s modernism era. He worked together with famous Walter Gropius, Le
Corbusier and Peter Behrens. He focused on minimalist style and he quotes “Less
is More” to emphasized the minimalism of his architecture. Some of the famous
work of Mies are Barcelona Pavilion, concrete office building, Alumni memorial
hall, Seagram building, convention hall, 860-880 Lake Shore Drive and etc.
Fransworth house is situated in Plano,
Illinois. It was built for Dr. Edith Fransworth.
It was built along the Fox River. It is
just a small building in a huge acre of land which portrays simple dwelling.
This building is a glass pavilion and also provoke’s Mies minimalism by using
only one material for all facades. Fransworth house has three horizontal lines
which are podium, floor and roof slabs lifted above the ground by columns. The
interior space has no rooms but the spaces are divided by walls. The house has
bathrooms, kitchen, utility pace, storage and a small bedroom. It is also the site for National
preservation.
