Crown Hall, 1956- Present
A MODERN CLASSROOM
The S. R. crown hall located in chicago was built in 1956 by Mies Van Der Rohe. The building was designed to be a school for architecture. The interior of the building was designated a landmark by 2001. The building accurately shows the style of architecture that Mies Van Der Rohe practiced. “One of Mies van der Rohe’s last buildings erected on the Illinois institute of technology campus is Crown Hall, a Superb example of his clear span designs”. The building is said to be a masterpiece of modern architecture. It shows the construction and materiality that is modern architecture. The structure transcends itself and becomes art, it is the perfect representation of Mies Van Der Rohe’s ideas. There are no columns on the floor plan which further shows the idea of universal space. “In this manner, with steel and glass, a dramatic, single space measuring 120 by 220 feet and 18 feet high is created”. The architect wanted an open area that can be transformed as its use changes. Buildings were often overlapped to reduce the space wasted and allow for a smooth and quick transition to another space. “In this manner, with steel and glass, a dramatic, single space measuring 120 by 220 feet and 18 feet high is created”. The building is vast with a 120’ by 220’ area and 18’ height which allows for classes to happen simultaneously without interrupting the other. This allows for the maximized use of a space and still allow for a creative working environment. The building is used to teach design and architecture. “Crown Hall, in which architecture, city planning, and design are taught has a symmetrical plan about its short axis”.The building is one of many designed by Mies van Der Rohe for the campus. He started by laying a 24’ by 24’ grid on the site. The grid was this size to locate where to put the columns of the buildings. The existing streets were incorporated into the grid. Not only did he use the grid to place buildings but he also used it to place green spaces. Through this commission Mies strengthened his ideas about modern architecture which was seen by others in the field. The building is the favorite of the collection at the school and brings both the school and Mies attention.
