Le Petit
Trianon is the residence in the palace of Versailles in Versailles, France. The
building was sited in the middle of the garden. Ange Jacques Gabriel built Le
Petit
Trianon. It was Louis XV’s gift to his mistress, Madame de Pompadour. But she
didn’t get to enjoy this as she passed away before its completion in 1768. In
1774, Louis XV died from the pox and the throne was accessed by Louis XVI and
Marie Antionette. Marie redecorated it for her comfort because she wanted to
create a place where she can get away from the formality of the kingdom, as she
was only 19 years old then.
Marie
redesigned in English style where the French gardens are in symmetrical and proportion.
Trianon gardens were also designed with paths, hills, streams and a small
temple. Moreover, she also had her own farming village called the little hamlet
in the palace of Versailles. She played shepherdess with her ladies. They also
get food from this farm because the palace is nowhere near where they can
conveniently get food.
It is well
proportioned which makes the Petit Trianon a masterpiece. It is also modest in
scale and made with honey-colored limestone.
The Trianon
is simple and in cubist form with straight lines with Rocco style and
Neoclassicism. The Trianon is also famous for its simplicity but Gabriel made
his design not to look simple by having different facades on all faces.
The south
façade overlook courtyard has four pilasters and slight projection of the three
central bays. North façade is similar to the south one but has different
heights. East façade overlook Louis XV’s botanical garden. West façade is
facing French garden. The west façade has more detailed and elegant terrace.
Moreover, it also has four majestic Corinthian columns with slight projection.
French garden which west façade is faced to is symmetrical and proportioned. It
has lots of plants in it and structures such as the French Pavilion, the Bird
House, and the Cool Room.
The interior
of the Trianon is simple yet elegant. The first two floors are filled with vast
staircase. The kitchen is on the ground floor. The first floor is opened out
directly onto the gardens. The interior door handles and decorations are detailed.
The furniture is also neoclassical style made by French furniture makers. The
Queen’s bedroom is on the Mezzanine floor, which looks out English Garden.
