Villa del Priorato di Malta

Villa del Priorato di Malta was built in 939 as a Benedictian monastery, this belonged to the monastery of the Chiesa from which was separated in977. By the end of the 12th century this became a property of the Templars the defenders of the Christianity against Muslims. Malta “is one of the two institutional seats of the government of the Sovereign Order of Malta” (Inspirock).
During the 1312 the Templars were suspended and given the monastery to the Knights the religion because they had established it as the Holy Land by the monk of Genard this allowed them to give them medical and boarding assistance to the pilgrims. This order was determined on the island of Rhodes between 1312 till 1522 by this time the Malta then waited till the 1798after the Napoleon decided to move to Rome with very limited hospital assistance on the field. By this time, they had change their name in 1522 to Sovrano Ordine di Malta and its Roman branch was named Gran Priorato di Roma. In the meanwhile, they changed their look, during the 1765 the nephew of pope Clement XII has a church join the Villa constructed with a new name S.Maria del Priorato.
On the plan above you can see see how in between gardens there’s a gathering area where people come together and socialize. The characteristic of the facade expresses the emblems of the naval and military associations during the Knights of Malta and Rezzonico family. This gives everyone a clear illustration of ancient Rome and Eturia. The inside of the church Piranesi designed white dominates with incredible sculpture altar. Going through this church you feel like your going through a maze each space is unique and brings the building together. This element is all about views and what each individual experience while touring the building. At the entrance there are “paired pilasters on either side of the door have fanciful capitals each formed of a tower flanked by seated sphinxes” (Italy Guides It a Sightseeing Revolution).
The fountain was surround by gardens and fruit yards which remain there from the times of the monastery; on the other side there’s a coffee house built which was ordered of Benedetto. All the planting on the east side were placed there in the early 19th century by Louis I while he was a residence in Rome. Inside of the villa there is a gallery full of portraits which were personalize by the person who was in place at the time. There is a beautiful view to St. Peter which is at the end of the avenue through the keyhole in the doorway. Villa Malta is known for its keyhole, through this you get a perceptive view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, with an elegant garden. Thousands of people The Villa Malta has very tourist places for example there’s a park that has an excellent views of the city of Rome, Saint Marie is located near by and in front of the church is the Mouth of Truth.
